The 10,000 Hours Show

A first-of-its-kind project, The 10,000 Hours Show seeks to encourage community volunteerism by rewarding civic engagement with a concert ticket. The concert is a celebration of volunteer achievements and the only admission is ten or more hours of volunteering.

Originally, The 10,000 Hours Show sought 1,000 volunteers who would contribute 10 hours of volunteer service apiece, or 10,000 total hours. In our second year, we accomplished more than double that goal. In its third year, The 10,000 Hours Show was open to volunteers and nonprofits from all counties in Iowa.

Volunteers from across the State, including several from Central Iowa Shelter, attended the 10K3 concert in April 2006, celebrating another ground-breaking year of community service.

Mission: Possible

Founders of the 10,000 Hours Show “believe that volunteerism is the cornerstone of any community. Through volunteerism citizens find purpose and personal connections, communities fill considerable needs, and students learn through practical experience.”

The program strives to:
· Encourage and support community involvement
· Promote volunteerism
· Reward all volunteers with entertaining, well-known musical acts
· Recruit new volunteers and retain past volunteers
· Provide extra incentive for first-time volunteers
· Supply easy access to volunteer opportunities
· Publicize community organizations, their causes, and their needs

The 10,000 Hours Show is produced by The James Gang, a 501(C)(3) non-profit community organization, and the Public Project, a University of Iowa student group. 10K is run 100% by volunteers, all under the age of 25.

To learn how you and other volunteers can earn admission to the 10K4 concert to be held in 2007, log onto the 10,000 Hours website at www.10000hours.org.
